The stock 2010 KTM SMT 990 does not have radiator protection. I tried ordering but they did not have it available. I already saw a rock ding mark on the radiator so it was imperative that it be protected before any further damage was done. (Official Philippine Dealer) Toti advised that I use stainless screen and I did install it with a tie clip for a while, but after I fabricated a properly framed 12" x 12" screen from a local Aluminum and Glass fabricator, there was finally a way to install a nice looking protection screen. Here is a simple step by step:

1. Fabricate a 12 inch by 12 inch Stainless Screen similar to what they use in screen doors. Make sure it has that diamond backing to act as strengthener. Buy some heavy duty tie-clips.

2. Wrap the edges with Electric tape to avoid scratches to the bike and its radiator.

3. Loosen the horn on the top of the radiator to allow the screen to slide behind it. You may have to push that frame with a bit of force to slide behind the horn. The nut of the horn should lock just below the frame. Make sure the sides of the frame are aligned with the radiator.

4. Use the heavy duty tie-clip to secure the bottom of the frame and achieve a tight and secure fit on the radiator. Now Cut the tie clip.

5. If you check from underneath you will see that there is good space in between the radiator and the screen so you are sure the radiator wont get scratched by the aluminum screen.

6. And there you have it! nice and neat!

What is the reason you have a protector like this?

got a silver-colored-bent area in the radiator that was obviously hit by a small rock. Did not want it to ever happen again since I do ride in different road conditions.

How much gap is there between the protector and the radiator?

since the radiator curves, the gap increases toward the center. may an inch at the center.
